강구조 및 교량구조 연구실에서는 강구조물과 장경간 도로교, 철도교, 케이블 교량의 해석 및 설계에 대한 연구를 수행 중이다. (1) 강구조물 (steel structures) 연구로서, 고강도 강재를 활용한 해석과 설계기술 연구를 수행하고 있으며, 강 부재의 피로와 좌굴에 대한 연구를 진행하였다. (2) 고속철도교량 (high-speed railway bridges) 관련 연구에서는, 열차와 지진하중을 고려한 열차-궤도-교량 (train-track-bridge) 상호작용 해석으로 교량과 3차원 열차차량의 주행 안전성 (running safety)을 연구하고 있다. (3) 케이블교량 (cable-supported bridges) 연구에서는, 사장교와 현수교뿐만 아니라 다경간 현수교와 사장-현수교와 같은 미래형 케이블 교량의 정적 및 동적 구조해석을 수행하고 있다. 또한 케이블교량-장대레일-고속열차-풍하중-지진하중을 동시에 고려하는 고속철도용 케이블 교량의 구조해석과 설계를 수행중이다. (4) 부유식 해양구조물 (floating offshore structures) 연구에서는, 부유식 해중 터널 (submerged floating tunnel) 및 부유식 해상풍력 터빈 (floating wind turbines)과 같은 해양 구조물과 이를 지지하는 계류 케이블 (mooring cables)의 해석 및 설계에 대한 연구도 수행 중이다.

 

대한토목학회에서 부회장(2018-2019)과 강구조위원회 위원장(2015-2018)으로, 한국강구조학회에서 부회장(2015-2017)으로, 한국교량및구조위원회에서 부회장(2015-2019)으로 활동하고 있다. 국가설계기준의 집필 및 개정 작업에 참여하여, 도로교설계기준, 고속철도설계기준, 강구조설계기준 등에서 강구조 집필위원이다. 대한토목학회와 한국강구조학회에서 학술상을 수상하였다.

 

국토교통부, 한국도로공사, 한국수자원공사, 서울특별시, 인천광역시, 한국철도시설공단, 환경관리공단, 한국시설안전기술공단 등에서 설계심의분과위원, 설계자문위원, 기술자문위원으로 활동하고 있다.

 

국제적 학술활동으로, 국제강구조학술지 (International Journal of Steel Structures)의 편집장 (Editor, 2009-2013)으로 활동 하였으며, 현재 미국토목학회 교량공학학술지 (ASCE, Journal of Bridge Engineering)의 부편집장 (Associate Editor)이다. 국제구조및교량학회 (IABSE)의 국제콘프런스에서 과학위원회 (Scientific Committee)로 활동하고, 성능요구위원회(C1)TG1.5 (Bridge Collapse Task Group)에서 교량붕괴의 사례와 원인 분석팀에서 활동 중이다.
