장재원 교수의 주요 연구 분야는 Multiphase fluid flow in porous/fractured media이며 적용대상으로는 에너지 자원생산 (geothermal recovery, gas hydrate production), 폐기물 처리 (geological CO2 sequestration, landfill)등이다. 또한 전통적인 토질분야 (기초, 사면, 터널, 도로)에도 새로운 기술과 공법 (nanoparticle application, bio-mediated and bio-inspired geotechnics)을 적용하여 지반을 개량하는 연구를 진행하고 있다.
