Founded in 1939 as the Department of Civil Engineering at the Dong-A Institute of Technology, our department is one of the oldest civil engineering programs in Korea and has produced numerous distinguished professionals who have played a pivotal role in the nation’s economic development.

Building on a strong foundation in traditional civil engineering, our department is expanding its academic horizons into innovative research areas that will lead future society, including sustainable infrastructure, environmental and energy engineering, smart cities, and next-generation mobility.

Our world-class faculty and researchers address complex global challenges such as climate change, urbanization, resource and energy issues, and automation and unmanned systems, conducting advanced research toward a sustainable future.

The department actively carries out numerous R&D and educational projects, including National Research Foundation Leader and Mid-career Research Programs, large-scale research initiatives, and the BK21 program, producing research outcomes of the highest global standards. As a result, we are consistently recognized as a leading department in the field of civil engineering in national and international university evaluations.

A dedicated department building, established through the generous contributions of our alumni, houses advanced education and research infrastructure. In addition, we provide an educational environment that enables students to balance academic excellence with practical experience through industry–academia collaboration and international exchange programs.

Moving forward, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Hanyang University will continue to serve as an academic community where tradition and innovation are harmonized, taking the lead in designing a sustainable future for humanity and the global environment.
