About the Prof.
Multi-hazard Resilient Structural Systems (MRSS) research group aims to establish advanced civil infrastructure systems that ensure safety and sustainability in unpredictable future disaster environments through experiments, numerical simulations, and data science. Beyond focusing on individual extreme loading scenarios such as earthquakes, fires, explosions, or collisions, MRSS emphasizes complex disasters where multiple hazards occur simultaneously or sequentially. MRSS performs an accurate estimation of cumulative damage and cascading effects, and develops innovative structural systems capable of flexibly responding to any type of disaster. Actively leveraging artificial intelligence, MRSS develops models that rapidly and accurately predict the residual capacity of structures during disasters, thereby supporting optimal recovery prioritization under limited resources. Additionally, MRSS establishes a reinforcement learning-based optimization framework to dramatically reduce the computational demands of performance-based design. Moreover, MRSS advances smart retrofitting techniques using advanced materials such as shape memory alloys to enhance structural performance, extend life cycle, and increases societal safety value.
