About the Prof.
The Engineered Geomaterials Research Laboratory at Hanyang University is dedicated to overcoming the limitations of natural geomaterials and developing innovative materials and testing methods to meet the demands of modern society. Our research goes beyond a simple analysis of soil; we adopt an interdisciplinary approach that integrates geotechnics, geophysics, and geochemistry to fundamentally understand and control the properties of ground materials. While traditional geotechnical engineering often focuses on the exploration and analysis of natural soils, our lab aims to create and synthesize new materials that go beyond what nature provides. This involves more than just mixing soils; we design ground materials to achieve specific engineering performance goals, such as strength, stiffness, and permeability, by investigating the subtle interactions and physicochemical reactions between individual particles. We also pursue sustainable research by transforming various industrial waste materials, such as steel slag, fly ash and red mud, into valuable geomaterials, thereby addressing environmental issues and creating economic value. To achieve these goals, our lab utilizes a wide range of advanced tools, including state-of-the-art in-situ and laboratory testing equipment, as well as specialized analytical instruments like scanning electron microscopes (SEM) and geophysical exploration devices, to conduct in-depth and multi-faceted research on the behavior of geomaterials.
